Garage Door materials
Garage doors can be made out of several materials, with the most popular being steel, fibreglass and occasionally, hardwood. There are pros and cons to each, depending on your requirements, available design, how your door is operated, and of course, your budget.
Of the three options, steel is recommended if you are more security-conscious; it's also versatile to use in all modes of operation, particularly in roller garage doors. Fibreglass, or GRP, is a lightweight and durable option which is also low-maintenance and resistant to issues such as warping, as well as offering a wide range of options for customisation. Though hardwood is a less common material given the convenience of GRP, its timeless elegance is unrivalled if you are after a truly luxurious look.

Up and Over Garage Doors
Due to their cost efficiency and versatile range of designs available, this is the most popular garage door mechanism. There are additionally two sub-variants, which is retractable and canopy, named after the position of the door when it's fully opened.
As the name suggests, canopy doors leave a slight roof overhang when it's in the open position. Both methods of operation are suitable for most types of property. As the door is operated as a single panel, this allows for maximum freedom in the design of the door, including the option to incorporate small windows.
Sectional Garage Doors
As the name implies, sectional doors are composed of several sections, which can be opened and closed in a vertical or horizontal motion depending on the layout of your garage and the design of your door panel.
It's one of the most popular types as it's fully available for all sizes of garage frames and openings, and requires less operation space than an up and over garage door.
Hinged Garage Doors
Hinged garage doors are generally not very common as they have a relatively large operational space requirement, but it offers a flexible range of designs and is usually recommended for older properties who require a specific garage door design.
Side-hinged garage doors can be split into uneven sizes (space permitting) to allow for individual pedestrian and vehicular access, and can be operated manually or automated.
Roller / Roll up Garage Doors
Roller garage doors are typically made from steel or aluminium, and offers the most secure solution and space efficiency. The door is made up from small horizontal slats, and during operation the door is, as the name implies, simply rolled up into the mechanism above the door, with takes up very little space. However, this does mean that the design is restricted to horizontal slats.
